History Made at Coachella
Bollywood actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh became the first Punjabi singer to perform at Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival. Wearing a black kurta and tamba with matching yellow turban and gloves, he performed some of his biggest hits making history on Sunday. His performance even included some high energy bhangra that got music lovers on their feet. DJ Diplo even got down dancing to Dosanjh’s incredible set.
The Punjabi singer and actor has even received praise for his performance from all the way in India. Singer Badshah and actors Varun Dhawan and Arjun Rampal excitedly posted about Dosanjh on social media. Even his “Utda Punjab” co-stars Kareena Kapoor and Alia Bhatt shared a reel of his performance at the world-famous music festival. Actress Rakul Preet Singh also expressed her joy seeing Punjabi culture being represented at such a big event.
Pakistani singer Ali Sethi is also making history by being the second Pakistani to headline Coachella. Along with Indian American rapper Raja Kumar, the duo performed the hit song Passori. There was even more South Asian representation at this music festival with Charli XCX whose mother is Indian, Jai Paul who is a British-Indian producer, and Joy Crookes, a British-Bangladeshi singer. All in all, this year’s lineup has had more South Asian performers than years prior, and it will be exciting to see what they have in store for years to come.
