Jay Sean on the future of albums
Indian-origin British singer-songwriter Jay Sean, who came on the music scene as a member of Rishi Rich Project with the single hit Dance With You, says he’s changing the way he produces music.
The 36-year old, recently released a single called Make My Love Go featuring Sean Paul, and believes that concept of albums is fading.
“I am changing my perspective, and slowly my belief in albums is starting to go away. Over the years, the way people consume music has changed and the idea of releasing albums may not be the best way to go about things,” he says.
Explaining his stance, Sean says listeners don’t have the patience to wait for an album. “You know, 15 years ago, one would patiently wait for an album by Michael Jackson. So when it came out, one would listen to every song on it. Now, they are not that patient. They want it now, so we have to keep releasing singles. Ten years ago, I’d have never released a single until my album was out, but now, I have to release it even before my album is complete, because people want to hear it instantly!”
Sean also believes that because of the internet, there’s no way to correctly determine which artist is doing really well in the industry. “Thanks to illegal downloads, there’s almost no foolproof way of tracking which artist is doing well in the industry.” he says. “I mean, a musician who is perhaps No. 20 on the music charts might have 100 million illegal downloads, but that won’t reflect in his popularity as compared to a singer who is number 1 on the chart but has only 50 million illegal downloads to his name. So there’s no way to say which artist is better,” adds Sean.
