Moview Review: ‘ABCD 2’ a must watch for Dance Fans.
Movie Review: ABCD 2
Rating: 3/5
Director: Remo D’Souza
Star Cast: Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor, Prabhudeva.
‘ABCD 2’, the sequel to ABCD-Any Body Can Dance has been one of the most awaited films of the year in part of the extensive promotions. Bollywood films are known for its song and dance sequences, but an entire film tapping into a somewhat new genre by having its plot based around “Dancing” presents some appeal to its audiences and the added element of 3D simply adds to the appeal.
There’s something positively exhilarating about good music and great dance. Watching people move in perfectly flawless and sometimes artistically symmetrical form is inspiring. It makes you feel like putting the boombox on, tap a few steps yourself. That’s roughly how ABCD 2 affects its audience. It’s an infectious experience of stunning dance moves and thrilling music. It’s a feel good film, better still it makes you happy and it energizes your senses.
The movie starts off with a reality show where Suresh (Varun Dhawan) and Vinnie’s (Shraddha Kapoor) dance troupe is alleged of copying International Philippines group. But just before this accusation is made, an Illuminati dance performance is shown which will blow your mind with the 3D effects.
The focus is on performance arts alone. So the story does get a bit tepid. A dishonored group of young dancers from Mumbai decide to participate in an international dance competition. The idea is to win in a foreign competition and get their honor back, mixing in some emotional drama between the Instructor and the dance troupe and of course throwing in a “love story” between the 2 main characters. It boils down to a straight laced dance competition where it’s India versus rest of the world. The main reason, ABCD 2 makes you sit up and almost jump in your chair is the performances. Actors are dancing like pros and dancers are acting professionally.
There is no doubt that the entire case gave spell binding dance performances the Indian audience will ever see. A lot of Lord Ganpathi and patriotism themes do make it a little over dramatic, but strangely when it comes to dance, it gives you a kick. Dawan and Kapoor have given better acting performances in other movies, moreover with the lack of story you can’t expect much from them either. Prabhudeva was the only actor who got scope of acting and he did a good job at it too.
Like an all new hero with a fresh clean look and near perfection dance moves, Varun Dawan is on top of his game. Shraddha Kapoor matches Dawan step for step when it comes to dancing. You can see the effort, you can feel the commitment. This is another top notch performance from a star on a steep ascend. Prabhudheva is a legend on the subject and naturally his performance lives up to all expectations. The supporting cast made up of professional dancers like Lauren Gottlieb, Dharmesh, Punit and Raghav do more than a decent job with their acting.
The movie may lack story, but the two and a half hours you spend in the theater will be totally worth it, as you get to have some great laughs during comedy scenes and get thrilled during dance performances. The 3D effect wins it all. ABCD 2 makes for a great weekend watch.
