Priyanka Chopra to produce film on the romance of Tagore
“Love does not claim possession, but gives freedom.” Tagore explained love with such simplicity. A literary genius of such stature surely deserves a biopic and Priyanka Chopra is all set to do just that. The actress will reportedly produce a film based on his life and apparently, it’ll also showcase his romantic side.
After turning producer, Priyanka Chopra has been exploring stories to be told in several languages, including Marathi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Sikkimese and Goan. This time she will wear the producer’s hat for a Bengali-Marathi film titled Nalini.
The film will be a period-romance that will recreate the Nobel laureate’s life on screen. His romance back in 1878 will be brought alive on celluloid. Back in those days, he stayed with Dr Atmaram Pandurang Turkhud, and fell in love with his 20-year-old daughter, Annapurna. It is said that on her perusal, he addressed her as Nalini and forever marked their love through a poem he also set music to.
Speaking of this venture, the National Award-winning director Ujjawal Chatterjee told a leading daily-
Ujjawal Chatterjee, Director It was a platonic love story and the film will narrate it from the point of view of a young student, who visits modern day Santiniketan and sees a picture of Annapurna captioned Nalini. When we met Madhu Chopra (Priyanka’s producer mother) around two years ago, they wanted to know how much of the story was factually accurate and true. I showed them my research and they agreed to produce the film. It has since materialised into a saga of unrequited love.
Madhu Chopra further adds-
Madhu Chopra, Producer Priyanka wants good stories to reach audiences. Nalini has great potential and is an entertaining subject. We’re happy to be associated with it.
Priyanka’s Marathi venture Ventilator recently won a National Award and it will be interesting to see how this new take on Rabindranath Tagore will pan out.
