Bollywood & Oscars! What no Asian Films?
The 87th Academy Awards are just 2 days away and Spotlife Asia is looking forward to giving you live updates from the Oscars. This year around we have no Indian talent who made it to the Oscars but there have been several talented celebrities and artists who made it to Oscars in prior years. ‘Liar’s Dice’ was one of the contenders in the Best Foreign Language film category but unfortunately did not make it. Despite the size of the Indian Film Industry we have failed to appear at Oscars this year. Can we really label it as a failure? Afterall “Bollywood” puts of the highest number of productions each year and we all have to admit those days of actors dancing around the fields between strategically placed trees and flowers are long gone, although we cant seem to shake the song and dance sequences.
On the positive note, several Indian talents have nominated and even won an Oscar in the past. To name a few – Bhanu Athaiya for Best Costume Design for the film Gandhi, A R Rahman for Best Original Song and for original score which brings us to Slumdog Millionaire the film that was nominated under 10 different categories, Director Shekhar Kapur’s film Elizabeth for Best Costume and it had several nominations. Other than that we’ve seen Aishwarya Rai, Mallika Sherawat, John Abraham, Deepa Mehta, Lisa Ray, Aamir Khan and his “Lagan” crew, Ashutosh Gowariker , Anil Kapoor, Jai Patel, Frida Pinto, Irrfan Khan, Suraj Sharma and many others have walked the Red Carpet.
This time around we can definitely expect Irrfan Khan to be on Red carpet since he has become one of the regulars in Hollywood films. He does have two big roles in Jurassic World and Inferno to look forward to in Hollywood (mentioned in my previously posted article ‘Irrfan Khan to Star in Tom Hanks’ Inferno).
