EXCLUSIVE: Shiamak 1 on 1 with SpotLife Asia

SpotLife Asia recently sat down with the one and only Shiamak Davar for an exclusive one on one interview during his Main image- Shiamak.recent “Have Feet Will Dance” campaign and the Summer Funk show.  Here is what the Dance Guru had to say.

SA: Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to speak with us a few moments.  Its been almost a year since we 1st chatted during the IFFA awards in Tampa, FL. Can you tell us about whats been going on worldwide with your dance troop and students?
SD: It’s the 20th year of my annual students show, Summer Funk that started in Mumbai and will take place in 25 cities this year, so I’m really excited about that. Last year we added USA to our list of centers. New York is the hub of arts and culture and I’m humbled by the overwhelming response. My contemporary dance show Selcouth is presented regularly in Mumbai and this show always gives me a sense of creative satisfaction. Besides, many shows and award events have kept me busy this first quarter. Looking forward to lots more happening through the year.

SA: What’s next for Shiamak?  Any secret sneak peaks?
SD: I’d let that be a surprise!

SA: Besides dance, what’s your passion?  How do you relax and simply enjoy some “me time”?
SD: I love watching movies. Most evenings post rehearsal, you’d find me at a movie theater!

SA: For all those aspiring dancers, what’s the number 1 advise you can give them?
SD: Have a genuine passion for dance. To make it as a performer, you will definitely need talent, but beyond that it is all hard work and dedication. Spend enough time training yourself. And most importantly, always be a student. The dance scene is ever changing with new music and new movements, so stay inspired and keep learning.

SA: Ok so the world loves Shiamak without a question as the Guru of Dance, but who’s your favorite dancer?
SD: Gene Kelly! And I love Madonna as a performer.

SA: Can you share something about yourself that your fans may not know?
SD: I love Goan food!

SA: Are you connected with any charity organization, what attracts you to them?
Dance has the power to heal and lift the spirit. From the time I started my dance classes, a few kids with special needs would come to class and their parents saw a change not only in their personality but also in their motor skills. In 2004 I started my non-profit VICTORY ARTS FOUNDATION. Using dance as therapy, we empower individuals with special needs and also the unprivileged through dance and the performing arts. Today, some of them are instructors and teach dance at my school, perform shows and musicals and have made a career in dance.
