Shakti was the brainchild of guitar virtuoso John McLaughlin. After immersing himself in the study of Indian music and spirituality, McLaughlin sought to bring together Indian musicians who shared his passion for fusion. Thus, Shakti aptly derived its name from the Sanskrit word meaning “power” or “energy.”

The magic of Shakti lay in the coming together of phenomenal musicians from diverse backgrounds. Alongside McLaughlin, the band featured tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, violinist L. Shankar, and ghatam (clay pot) wizard T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram. Each member of Shakti brought a unique style and musical heritage to the table, creating a melting pot of cultures and genres.

Shakti showcased a mesmerizing fusion of Indian ragas, intricate jazz improvisation, and complex rhythms. The band’s music was built on the foundations of Indian classical music, characterized by its evocative melodies and rhythmic intricacies. McLaughlin’s masterful guitar work effortlessly blended the complex fretwork of fusion jazz with the soul-stirring sounds of Indian classical music.

This group is everything that I could possibly imagine in a music offering,” concludes Hussain. “As far as I’m concerned, it is the pinnacle, the musical nirvana of my musical career.

Beyond their breathtaking musicianship, Shakti left an indelible mark on the world of music that can still be felt today. The band was instrumental in introducing Indian music to Western audiences, fostering a newfound appreciation for its beauty and depth. Shakti served as a gateway, inspiring many musicians to experiment with fusion and pushing the boundaries of what was previously considered possible.

The band produced several iconic albums that showcased their unparalleled talent. Their self-titled debut album “Shakti” (1975) laid the foundation for their unique sound, followed by the captivating “A Handful of Beauty” (1976) and the vivacious “Natural Elements” (1977). Each album was a masterpiece, encapsulating the divine energy and spirituality that defined Shakti’s music.

While Shakti disbanded in the late 1970s, their legacy lives on. The impact they made on the landscape of fusion music continues to inspire countless artists, from the streets of Mumbai to the jazz clubs of New York. Various members of Shakti have gone on to achieve extraordinary success in their solo careers, but the magic they created together remains unparalleled.

In the late ‘90s, the band reformed with Shankar Mahadevan on vocals, U.Srinivas on mandolin and Selvaganesh Vinayakram replacing his father Vikku alongside McLaughlin and Hussain – bringing another creative dimension to an ensemble that was already considered one of the best groups in the emerging world music genre. After the tragic loss in 2014 of Mandolin U. Shrinivas, Shakti once again ceased to perform. However, in early 2020, the group again reconstituted itself, convening with violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan.

Now McLaughlin and Hussain – still flanked by Mahadevan, Selvaganesh, and Rajagopalan – are poised to reunite for a studio album of new compositions and a world tour to mark Shakti’s 50th anniversary.

It’s really a thrill,” McLaughlin says of Shakti’s 50th anniversary plans. “I’m delighted to be part of this marvelous tradition of the Shakti group.

Shakti’s music transcended borders, genres, and even time itself. Their mystical melodies challenged conventions and took audiences on a journey through cultures and spirituality. Whether you are a connoisseur of fusion, an enthusiast of Indian classical music, or simply someone seeking musical enlightenment, Shakti’s harmonious fusion will captivate your soul. Let the power of Shakti’s music envelop you, and embark on a mystical journey like no other.

The World tour kicked off in India on January 20th, 2023, and will continue to Europe and America in Summer and Fall. Their complete tour schedule and ticket information are here: Shakti 50th Anniversary Tour.
