How are the winners of the Grammy’s decided

With Boonie Raitt ‘s surprising Song Of The Year victory for “Just Like That” over artists like Adele, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Harry Styles and others at Sunday’s Grammys has left the internet in shock and wondering how Grammy winners are determined in the first place.

The process begins with record companies entering music submissions during the eligibility year. Then over 350 experts review the recordings to see if the submissions meet all the qualifications and if they have been placed in the correct category like Country, Pop, Rap, and others. After everything has been properly checked, voting members are sent first-round ballots. These members typically consist of people working within the recording industry. In the past there has been more than 12,000 members voting on nominees. Generally, members vote for nominees in their area of expertise. They are allowed to vote in up to 10 categories along with Record Of The Year, Album Of the Year, Song Of The Year, and Best New Artist. The votes are then collected and organized by Deloitte, an accounting firm.

After the nominations have been released, the voting members vote again in the same categories for the final winners that are announced live at the Grammys.
