When a top cop is sent away on a punishment posting as the Dean of a Police training academy, he decides to get back at a corrupt system by training five cadets to carry out what he couldn’t finish. But his plan may not be as sure-fire as he imagines it to be.

Based on Hussain Zaidi’s book with the same name, ‘Class of 83’ tells the story of a committed Mumbai Police cop, Vijay Singh who goes through professional and personal losses simultaneously.  Follow Spotlife Asia for the latest entertainment and lifestyle news.

Director Atul Sabharwal has kept the action real. It’s no Singham or Dabangg where goons go flying after one punch. Bobby Deol thankfully does take up a machine gun and goes full Rambo on the bad guys. He’s the only one having battle scars, however. His five chosen soldiers go about their extrajudicial killings without feeling anything. It’s like they’re playing a video game and hence bumping off human beings does nothing to their psyche. The five newbies are excellent and hold the film together. Jadawat, Bhojraj and Paranjape get more screen time than others but the five as a whole come across as a cohesive unit.

Overall, the film gives off the impression of being the pilot episode of an interesting series on Mumbai’s cops and criminals. But ultimately, although ‘Class of 83’ had all the ingredients to make a gripping crime drama and recreates a realistic setting, it ends up dishing out a tedious watch.
