Movie Review: Kabir Singh

Movie: ‘Kabir Singh’
Rating: 3.5/5
Director: Sandeep Vanga
Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Kiara Advani, Soham Majumdar, Arjan Bajwa, Suresh Oberoi

Kabir Singh, a remake of the 2017 hit Indian- Telugu film Arjun Reddy is the story of a final year MBBS Student Kabir (Shahid Kapoor) who is reputed for being the topper of his college but also for being extremely short tempered and vulnerable to reacting aggressively when provoked.

Having gotten in trouble for a fist fight during the championship college football game, Kabir faces suspension for 1 month as long as he gives a written apology. Not wanting his ego to be hurt Kabir refuses to apologize, accepting removal from the college as a punishment. It is here he glances upon Preethi (Kiara Advani) a junior student, making him fall in love at first sight and causing him to change his mind on leaving the college. Within minutes he sets his claim on her and gives warning to the fellow students on repercussions of mistaking to fall in love with her.

The first half of the movie beautifully captures the love adventure between Kabir and Pretthi with exhilarating romance, funny lines as well as some  action.

It is here that the love story witnesses dramatic turn of events with Preethi’s dad unrelenting to accept their relationship, forcefully marrying her to another man ultimately driving Kabir to get engulfed in excessive use of alcohol and drugs.

The second half of the movie primarily focuses on the turbulent times faced by Kabir and his family who are trying hard to get him out of his rut he had gotten himself into.

At 2hrs and 55 mins long the movie seems a tad bit long, especially the second half could have been slightly trimmed with some redundantly sad scenes involving Kabir’s drowning life making the editors cut.

Ably Directed by Sandeep Vanga of Arjun Reddy fame the movie never becomes boring or tiresome to watch, which deserves its due credit for a gripping screenplay and direction. The hit music of course enhances the narrative to a greater extent.

The support cast led by Soham Majumdar who reprised the role of Shiva, Kabir’s lone best friend deserves due credit for an appreciable performance both during comical scenes as well as serious in nature. Arjan Bajwa (Brother), Suresh Oberoi(Father) and Kamini Kaushal(Dadi) as Kabir’s family members are also worth mentioning,

Kiara Advani is the show stealer with a beautiful portrayal of Pretthi. She was equally amazing in the scenes which required her to elude romance as much as cry out in despair during desperate times.

Shahid Kapoor as Kabir gives one of the best performance of his career so far, the initial few scenes where he exhibits anger may seem a bit far stretched but he grasps control on the character as the movie moves along and makes it his own by the end of it.

Overall, Kabir Singh may not be a classic love story but is certainly one that will make you fall in love as well as your bring a tear or two in your eyes. A winner with the youth for sure.. Go watch it !!
