Netflix gears to cater more Bollywood content
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said even with 400 scripted TV series scheduled for 2016, they do not have enough content to telecast. He believes that the company is making the best efforts to produce more exclusive programs which are not telecast by any other production company.
This program includes Bollywood-type series and anime, which can be telecast to expand to foreign markets. Showtime CEO Matt Blank asked Mr. Hastings how the company will maintain the level of quality. Mr. Hastings replied saying Netflix isn’t afraid to try new things, by giving the example of the new crime drama Narcos, which has seen rapid success.
He believes the internet has played a big role in solving the problem of distribution, and now it is the role of the creators to make interesting shows which find audiences in foreign countries.
Netflix chooses the aggressive approach for its original programming ambitions. The company is expected to use $5 million on content by next year. It includes partnering with American actor and comedian Aziz Ansari, who will be featuring in the upcoming Netflix show Master of None, and obtaining TV rights to indie movies as in the case of Beasts of No Nation, earlier this year.
Earlier in August, FX head John Landgraf said a large number of TV shows in a short span would become overwhelming for the costumer, and there is a risk that this would adversely affect otherwise successful shows. The Netflix boss said the company has a lot of choice, and great shows will always find loyal viewers.
We believe if Netflix opts for Bollywood themes, it will also be expected to attract the market in Asia, where it showed success with House of Cards and Narcos. With success in Bollywood-style shows, it will be able to attract a large Indian market.
