Never Have I Ever Been in the Netflix Top 10

Never have I ever had to binge the last season of my favorite show.

Fans said a bittersweet farewell to the hit Netflix series Never Have I Ever. The show’s final season came out last Thursday with millions of people around the world tuning in. Netflix totaled around 76.21 million hours viewed and 15 million views for its release. It came in at No. 2 for the Netflix for Top 10 and No. 1 for Top 10 TV Shows for the U.S., India, the U.K., Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Australia, and Brazil.

The show highlights Indian American high schooler Devi Vishwakumar and her crazy antics involving boys, school, friends, family, and her Tamil culture. The four seasons follow Devi’s journey processing her father’s traumatic death and how it affects her everyday life as she follows (or tries to follow) her therapist Dr. Ryan’s advice.

One of the many things that makes this show stand out is the South Asian representation Mindy Kaling put on Netflix. It highlights Indian family values with three generations of Tamilian women living in the same household as well as talking about holidays such as Diwali and Navratri. The show also spotlights several inter-racial and LGBTQ+ relationships as well as have a strong ethnically diverse cast.

The cast spotlights Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi, Darren Barnet as Paxton, Jaren Lewison as Ben, and Poorna Jagannathan as Nalini. Tennis player John McEnroe narrates most of the show, but swaps out with other big names like Andy Samberg and Gigi Hadid in some special episodes.

Never Have I Ever is one of Mindy Kaling’s many successful projects. Alongside The Office and The Mindy Project, some of her newer shows include Velma, a retelling of the classic Scooby-Doo series, and the Max hit The Sex Lives of College Girls. Kaling has done a lot in representing the South Asian community in Hollywood. Her rendition of Velma has the protagonist be of South Asian descent as well as having one her characters on The Sex Lives of College Girls Bela be Indian. She crafts details regarding South Asian culture which enhance the show and the representation young viewers see on the screen: especially with Never Have I Ever. Even though this was the final season of Never Have I Ever, fans can’t help but hope for a spin-off show as they look to the future.
