Meet Anjali Patel, for whom pursuing the American Dream has been a long and arduous journey. She was born and raised in Mumbai, India, before moving to San Francisco, California, when she was 25. After obtaining a computer science degree, she moved to the United States for better job opportunities. Like many immigrants, she was looking for a new start and greater opportunities for success.

Anjali started working as a software developer and had to adapt to different work cultures and environments, which was a significant challenge. Her first hurdle was language; though she was fluent in English, she was not accustomed to the American accent. She had to relearn much of the vocabulary used in the workplace to communicate effectively with her colleagues. Anjali also had to learn to work independently, work with fewer resources and juggle multiple projects at the same time.

Despite the challenges, Anjali was able to get a foothold in her profession and started to climb the ranks. Like many Indian Americans, she focused on one goal- financial and material success. However, success came at a cost. Her job demanded that she spend long hours at work, putting in immense effort and time on her job. It led to emotional burnout and stress, which impacted her health and personal life.

Anjali is still pursuing her American Dream, but her priorities have changed. She now understands that the definition of the American Dream goes beyond material wealth or success. It is about building a secure and fulfilling life in a country that gives her the opportunity to do so. Being able to blend the best of Indian and American cultures has also been an essential component of her life.
