The cast of Everything Everywhere All at Once at Sunday’s SAG Awards

With the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, fans got a little preview of the upcoming Oscars. The biggest winner of the night: Everything Everywhere All at Once. After taking home the award for Outstanding Cast, this sci-fi film is looking like a front runner for the Oscars. The movie also took home Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role with Michelle Yeoh, Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role with Ke Huy Quan, and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role with Jamie-Lee Curtis.

94-year-old James Hong who played a supporting role in the movie, accepted his award and closed out the night by talking about Asian American representation and how far they’ve come in the last several years in the industry. The plot of Everything Everywhere All at Once revolves around a Chinese American immigrant who is trying to keep the universe save from an evil being bent on destroying the multiverse. She must connect with parallel version of herself while also being audited by the IRS. Hong talked about how Asian characters used to be played by white people with their eyes taped up and who mimicked an accent. He talks about the progress that has been made just by them being on the stage accepting the awards.

Other big winners of the night include Abbott Elementary taking home Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series and The White Lotus winning Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Top Gun: Maverick and Stranger Things both won Outstanding Stunt Ensemble in their respective categories.

With the Oscars approaching in a couple weeks, film lovers are keeping their eyes on SAG winners Top Gun: Maverick, The Whale and of course, Everything Everywhere All at Once. After winning big at the directing and producing guilds as well, fans will have to wait and see if the film lives up to its name and really wins every award all at once on March 12.
