Foods NOT To Refrigerate

We all go grocery shopping and our tendency is to refrigerate all fresh foods once get home.  But have you asked yourself that if all those things actually do belong in the refrigerator?

Well, there are few fruits and vegetables that actually do not belong in refrigerator and it’s good to be cooked or eaten without ruining the taste and quality by refrigerating them.

Tomatoes: Refrigerating tomatoes loses its freshness and stops the process of ripeness.  When the natural process is stopped by refrigerating them than the tomatoes also loses its flavor and texture.  It’s best to store tomatoes out on counter and used accordingly.

Basil: Though Basil may stay fresh in the fridge, it shrivels quicker too and it also tends to absorb the taste of other foods kept close to it. The best way to keep Basil fresh is keep it outside with stems of basil dipped in half glass of water.

Potatoes: The cold temperature of fridge actually breaks down the starches potatoes, making them sweeter than they are.  Potatoes should be kept outside of refrigerator but covered to keep them in same condition in a cool and dark place.

Onion: Onions can get soft and moldy in the fridge so it’s best to keep them in a cool and dry place, outside the fridge.  Do keep Onion and Potatoes separate from each other outside as well as it may go bad faster if kept together.

Garlic: Garlic heads or unpeeled garlic is best to be kept outside of refrigerator to preserve its powerful flavor.

Avocado: If you’re waiting for the avocado to ripen, you should never refrigerate them.  It’s only better to refrigerate them if it has already ripened and you what to prevent it from going bad.

Melons: Melons like Watermelon, Cantaloupe and Honeydew are best to kept on your kitchen counter for best flavor and it also keeps the antioxidants that it contains, unharmed.

Fruits like Apple, Plums, apricots, nectarines and even berries can be kept at room temperature for short period in order to get its natural taste or flavor.  If you’re planning to not eat them quicker then it’s better to refrigerate them.
