Netflix’s Drastic Price Decrease in India
Netflix is drastically lowering its prices in India. As of right now, Netflix is charging $2.66 for a basic plan there, which compared to the $15.49 charge in the US, is insanely cheap. Even though India is now the most populated country on the planet, it turns out that not that many people are willing to pay a lot of money for a subscription.
In 2020, Netflix in India cost around $6.67 and has been dwindling since. Meanwhile, everywhere else, the prices have been rising for years. Netflix originally used to cost $9 a month, which users would love to go back to, but as the demand for streaming increased, so did the price.
Along with the price decrease, in another attempt to get more of the Indian subcontinent on the streaming service, Netflix partnered with Reliance Jio. With almost 450 million customers, Jio is India’s top phone carrier, and they are now offering a bundle that includes access to Netflix for $5 a month. The streaming company is hoping to reach more people and gain more subscriptions through this partnership.
With the selection of Bollywood, Tollywood, and other Indian movies and TV shows on the platform, the subcontinent is not the only target audience for this content. It is also consumed by the 4.9 million Indian and Indian-origin population in the US. Even though they are working their way up, Netflix is hoping their Indian demographic is larger than what it is now.
