Simple truth is darker colors like black absorbs light so they will have a slimming affect.  Bright colors like white reflect light and will make an area appear larger.  Dark clothes make your outline less visible in dim light; black makes you disappear against the background.  Black flatters every skin tone and it make one look mature so a little black dress in your wardrobe is a must for every woman.

It also depends on the shape of the body and how you carry it.  If you are top heavy, a black blouse and a black jacket would go well to create the slim affect.  If you are bottom heavy, a straight-leg black trouser and a black skirt would make you look slimmer.

Wearing black all the time is not in style either and it could be depressing.  There are ways to work around black by mixing in colors such as Navy, Dark Brown, Dark Grey which would also portray a good slimming effect. They are also neutral which means you can match them with other colors easily.

Hiding imperfections while making you look slim and well put together, Darker color like Black makes it on the top of list for any models or celebrities.
