The 2023 BMW i4 EV, blending electrification with luxury
The BMW i4 is the latest all-electric sedan from BMW based on the company’s 4 Series Gran Coupe.
Coming off its debut last year, the i4 represents BMW’s blending of electrification and its history of producing some of the best luxury sport sedans. With up to 301 miles of estimated range and the kind of performance we’re used to seeing from a BMW 3 or 4 Series, the i4 is an intriguing pick among the few non-SUV EVs. The big news for 2023 is the addition of the new entry-level i4 eDrive35 model that starts around $52,000 and is estimated to go 260 miles on a full charge. The midrange eDrive40 and higher-performing M50 models return largely unchanged. BMW says a full charge with an 11-kW Level 2 charger from 0 percent capacity takes 8.5 hours. With a DC fast charger, it takes 31 minutes to go from 10 to 80 percent. Follow SpotLife ASIA for the latest news and updates.

The i4 was one of the first BMWs to feature the company’s iDrive 8 infotainment and connectivity software, called iDrive 8. Thanks to a free over-the-air update, the i4 gets upgraded to a newer version, iDrive 8.5. The system operates through a 14.9-inch touchscreen integrated with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel on a huge curved display on the dashboard.
There’s no shortage of standard active safety features on every 2023 i4. Each is equipped with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic monitoring, a lane keeping system, traffic sign recognition, automatic high-beams, and parking sensors. Opting for the Driver Assistance Professional package adds adaptive cruise control, a front cross-traffic monitoring system, and a more advanced lane keeping system. There’s also the Parking Assistance package, which throws a 360-degree camera system and more advanced parking sensors into the mix.
Inside, the i4’s cabin is richly appointed, including the availability of rose gold trim, white leather upholstery, and light wood trim. The general layout is similar to other BMW models, but the i4 and the all-electric iX SUV are the first to have a massive, seamless display that spans almost two-thirds of the dashboard. The four-door i4 has a dramatic rear roofline that imitates a coupe-like profile but has a traditional trunk in the back.
